You can try fish six different ways at this Sault Ste Marie restaurant

Updated: Jul 6, 2023

One of the true joys of a visit to the Upper Peninsula is eating freshly caught whitefish that has been expertly prepared. You can do just that at the Lockview restaurant in downtown Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, and the best part is you can eat it prepared six different ways, seven days a week.

Lockview is located in a prime spot in the Soo, right downtown and directly across the street from the Locks. If you grab a window seat either upstairs or down, you’ll have a great view of the freighters as they cruise through. First opened in 1945, current owners Steve and Amy Goetz continue to carry on the whitefish tradition that many visitors and locals have come to love during the summer shipping season.

The whitefish (and walleye) are locally caught and come six different ways: pan-fried, broiled, deep-fried, CAjun, Cajun deep-fried, and lemon pepper. You know us, we tried them all. Our favorite version was the Cajun deep-fried whitefish, but you honestly can’t go wrong with any version here. Dinners are served with two sides and a roll, and on Fridays it’s that greatest of Michigan holidays, the AYCE fish fry for $25. Insider tip: you can have whitefish with your eggs at breakfast here, and that is pretty much the most UP way to start off your day before adventuring around our Michigan treasure.

Don’t miss the whitefish dip at the Lockview, their version is exemplary. We also recommend perhaps starting your day with a Twin Saults Caesar, a version of the Bloody Mary that is very popular with our Canadian friends, of whom about 80,000 live across the river in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. Featuring Clamato juice, it is

a bracing, sharp and lively way to kick your day into gear.

Lockview is just one of many restaurants to try when you visit the Soo. We had our good friend Linda Hoath on the show recently to share some of her picks around town, check out the link below to listen. You can also plan your trip at saultstemarie.com.
